Charlie Hales, Mayor of Portland, Oregon

Mayor HalesCharlie Hales is the mayor of Portland; he took office Jan. 1, 2013. He previously served on the Portland City Council from 1993 to 2002. Hales took graduate studies in public administration at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, and holds a bachelor’s in political theory from the University of Virginia.

Mayor Hales’ current priorities are economic opportunity — including livable wages, ex-offender hiring incentives, benefit corporations — and livable neighborhoods — building sidewalks, ending veteran homelessness, developing underserved neighborhoods. He has also prioritized developing police-community relationships.

Prior to serving as City Commissioner, Hales was vice president for the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland. Between his service as City Commissioner and his election to the office of mayor, Hales was a senior vice president with HDR, Inc., an engineering firm, where he managed planning and design of new streetcar lines across the country. He lives in Portland with his wife, Nancy, and cat, Bogart.

Dan Wieden – Co-Founder and Chairman of Wieden+Kennedy

Dan WiedenDan Wieden grew up in Portland, graduated from the University of Oregon and worked briefly in public relations before trying his hand at copywriting. In retrospect, it wasn’t such a bad career move.

Dan quickly found himself at a local agency working with his creative partner, David Kennedy, on a regional sneaker account. When the agency–client relationship began to sour, Dan and David seized the moment, scraping together $500 apiece to open their own shop, (fittingly) on April Fools’ Day, 1982. They took the upstart sneaker company, called Nike, with them. Soon after, their only client introduced himself by announcing, “I’m Phil Knight. And I don’t believe in advertising.” After Dan and David exchanged panicked glances and contemplated the fate of their collective nine children, they set about making some of the greatest advertising that doesn’t believe in advertising ever made.

Three decades later, the agency that started with five employees and a shared pay phone down the hall has offices in Portland, New York City, London, Amsterdam, Delhi, Shanghai, Tokyo and São Paulo and nearly 1,200 employees around the world. Under Dan’s leadership, the agency has grown to be a global brand in its own right, operating 24 hours a day in dozens of languages on projects as varied as branding international companies, running an experimental advertising school, producing documentaries and TV series and even incubating technology start-ups.

As nice as the growth has been, Dan’s motivation has always been to create a different type of advertising agency, a place “where people can do the best work of their lives.” Dan threw out the structure and bureaucracy that plague larger agencies in favor of a chaos theory that puts the work first and empowers anyone to come to the table with a great idea.

Clearly, something is working. In 2012 Wieden+Kennedy was named both Independent Agency and Agency of the Year at Cannes, and Dan himself was awarded the Cannes Lion of St. Martin for his lifetime of achievement, further proof that Dan’s vision of an independent, creatively led agency can make meaningful, challenging work for its clients—and that it can be profitable. Over the past five years, W+K’s annual capitalized gross billings rose 55% to $3.2 billion, working with a diverse client base comprising some of the world’s most recognizable brands, including Coca-Cola, Chrysler, Delta Air Lines, ESPN, Facebook, Heineken, Honda, Nike, Old Spice and Procter & Gamble.

Despite all his success, Dan remains a regular guy. His door is always open to his employees and he is unflinchingly honest with clients. In an age when integrity is seldom found in the advertising business, Dan’s fight to remain independent and provide a place where fellow dreamers can find their voice has resulted in an environment where people and clients alike can flourish and make some of the best work of our time.

Freddy Ehlers Zurita, Minister of Well Being for the Government of Ecuador

Previously, he was Minister of Tourism from 10 May 2010 until June 2013. In 1996 and 1998 Ehlers stood candidate for the office of President of Ecuador. Between 1 February 2007 and 7 May 2010 Ehlers was the Secretary-General of the Andean Community of Nations

Freddy Ehlers has been a journalist for thirty years in which he has produced over a thousand documentaries. In 1979 he started the series “Let’s talk about ourselves”, which was the first program to show the cultural and natural values of the Andes. Between 1980 and 1988 he was director of the Program of Andean Television. In 1990 he began with the production of the series “La Televisión”, which emphasized environmental issues. It has been the most successful show by audience measurement in the journalism and opinion category in Ecuador between 1990 and 2006.

On 19 June 2013 his term as Minister of Tourism ended and he was named State Secretary for the Presidential Initiative for the Construction of a Society of Well Being. In his new capacity he started the television series “Acuerdo para el buen vivir” on 15 October 2014. The program was meant to start a dialogue on how to reach a society of Well Being.

He received the Global 500 Roll of Honor by the UNEP in 1993 for his work in raising awareness amongst Ecuadorians for the environment.

Darcy Stallings Winslow – Manager Partner, The Academy for Systemic Change

darcyDarcy Winslow is the CEO/Managing Partner and co-founder of the Academy for Systemic Change, an organization focused on dramatically accelerating the growth of the field of profound awareness-based systemic change worldwide, with an emphasis on developing the Next Generation of Leaders of the systemic change field itself.

In addition to the Academy, in 2008 Darcy founded DSW Collective, LLC, which focuses on the alignment of organizational values and principles with the development and implementation of practical yet aggressive systemic sustainable design strategies. And in 2012, she co-founded and co-leads the Generative Council as part of the Center for Nature and Leadership, focused on supporting the inner and outer work and growth of women leading organizational sustainability.

Before starting her business and the Academy, she worked at Nike, Inc. for 21 years and held several senior management positions within the business and the Nike Foundation, most notably starting the Sustainable Business Strategies in 1999, Senior Advisor to the Nike Foundation, Global Director for Research Design and Development and General Manager/VP for Nike’s Global Women’s Footwear, Apparel and Equipment division.

Sarah Severn – Principal, Sarah Severn Consulting

sarah severn2014Following 13 years in the advertising industry in London Sarah joined the Nike brand marketing team in Europe to establish their consumer insights department. A passion for environmental issues enabled her to change track in 1995 and relocate to Nike World Headquarters in Oregon as Global Director of the Environmental Action Team. From 1995 to 2000 she championed the introduction of sustainability into the business, from operations and supply chain through to product design and manufacturing. Following that she had a number of senior roles within the corporate responsibility and sustainable business teams, with a focus on leading stakeholder engagement activity and emerging issues and futures work.

As Senior Director of Stakeholder Partnerships in the Sustainable Business & Innovation (SB&I) team, her final role at Nike Inc. she was responsible for collective action within the Systems Innovation function. In this capacity, Sarah led the development of Nike Inc ’s climate change advocacy strategy, initiated the BICEP coalition (Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy), and the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) apparel business coalition.

After 21 years Sarah left Nike in August 2014 and is now living on San Juan island in Washington state. As principal of Sarah Severn Consulting she is advising Washington Business for Climate Action and the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy. She is also a Future Shapers roundtable host.

Sarah is also a Usui and Karuna Reiki master and has extensive training in shamanic healing. She weaves the vast practical experience of stakeholder partnership and collaboration together with the skills and tools of energy work and conscious leadership, enabling corporate leaders to be better equipped for the large scale planetary challenges we face.

Joshua S. Fouts – Executive Director, Bioneers

unnamedJoshua Sheridan Fouts is a globally recognized media innovator and social entrepreneur known for his visionary work paving new inroads for meaningful understanding between cultures. He is currently executive director of Bioneers, a 25-year-old NGO focused on practical solutions for people and planet.

An anthropologist, Joshua has worked in both film and the arts. He began his career in Washington, DC in the 1990s where he worked at the US State Department and began to experiment with new ways to use radio, television and Internet technology for cultural collaboration. He went on to launch two first-of-their-kind think tanks focused on digital media innovation and cultural relations at the USC Annenberg School in Los Angeles where he founded the first-ever blog about digital journalism and later created a new master’s degree in public diplomacy.

During his 20-plus years career in international and cultural relations, Joshua has personally worked with the peoples of Malaysia, Africa, and indigenous tribes of the Amazon. He has led or directed various intellectual projects in collaboration with governments and universities in over 20 countries on the planet.

Anders Ferguson – Founding Principal, Veris Wealth Partners

Veris is a registered investment advisor and pioneer in impact investing, serving investors who care as much about investment performance as using their wealth to positively impact society. Ian MacKenzie – Filmmaker; Co-Producer, Occupy Love

Ian MacKenzie is an award-winning filmmaker & media activist based in the Pacific Northwest of Turtle Island (aka Vancouver). His work has appeared in The New York Times, National Geographic TV, CBC Documentary, The Globe and Mail, Adbusters, and film festivals around the world.

His focus covers a range of diverse topics & subjects, though all fall under his mission of uncovering and amplifying stories of the emerging paradigm.

He co-produced Velcrow Ripper’s feature film Occupy Love (2013), and more recently released the short film Reactor (2013). Sacred Economics (2012) is one of his most popular web films, in collaboration with author Charles Eisenstein. Ian’s previous short The Revolution Is Love (2011) was named one of the top 10 Occupy films to watch 2011.

In 2010, he released his first documentary feature “One Week Job” – an inspirational story about a guy who worked 52 jobs in 52 weeks to find his passion. The project received widespread media attention (New York Times, CNN) and the film was aired on CBC Documentary Channel.

Ian MacKenzie also served as head of Matador Productions, overseeing original video series for the world’s largest independent travel magazine. The series“Breaking Free” was shot in countries ranging from China, Panama, Nicaragua, Thailand, Japan, and more.

Aside from film, Ian has created a variety of online projects including Let Me On Survivor and the spiritual travel magazine Brave New Traveler.

Tia Johnston Brown – Director of Global Licensing, Ashoka’s Youth Venture

Before coming to Ashoka Tia mobilized youth in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. In 2003 she joined Ashoka’s Youth Venture where she helped expand YV to 23 countries-working hand in hand with Ashoka’s social entrepreneurs to create unique and innovative program delivery methods.  She then went on to develop numerous Corporate Relationships (Starbucks, Nike, Adobe, Staples) as well as YV’s expansion strategy through global franchise development. Today she is leading a team focused on spreading the Youth Venture model through licensing in an effort to create an “everyone a changemaker world”- a world in which we all feel powerful enough to create change day to day.  This work is done by helping teachers and youth workers around the world to create a culture of changemaking within their schools and organizations.

Jean Brittingham – COO, New Legends

Through Brittingham Partners Jean has worked with multinationals such as Nike and Ford, as well as start-ups such as Katerva. Jean’s project, SmartGirls Way was focused on helping women entrepreneurs with sustainable solutions to scale.  Earlier in her career Jean worked with State Government in a significant effort to streamline, downsize and modernize agencies.  She is a committed traveler and loves creating meaningful connections and communities.  Her current passion is applying the intelligence of diversity, innovation and culture for resilient and powerful cultures.

Leb Tannenbaum – Founder & CEO, New Legends

Leb believes that leadership lives at every level of an organization and dedicates much time and energy to developing leaders who are both technically competent and emotionally intelligent. He has worked inside and outside as a consultant over the past 30 years. He helped to take an Oregon tech company public in 1997. He then joined that company and rode the wave of being acquired by Cadence Design Systems in 1998. In 1999 he was promoted to Vice -President and named the Dean of their Executive College.

Leb is happily married, the father of 7 amazing children and an enthusiastic basketball player. He is currently squeezing in the writing and production of a course designed to help people build and manage Trust. Unpacking Trust is due out in June of this year.
